10,000 Oppose Horse Tax Bill
Ministers are under pressure to reconsider controversial plans to introduce a new tax on horse owners after over 10,000 people signed a petition opposing the move.Even before the Government’s draft Animal Health Bill was published yesterday afternoon it had drawn criticism from the horse sector unhappy that the Government is pressing ahead with the plans despite overwhelming opposition from horse owners.

  Information on laminitis Laminitis is an extremely painful condition and more than 8000 ponies and horses in the UK suffer an acute attack for the first time each year. Many of these animals become chronically debilitated and prone to recurrent attacks, joining the UK herd of more than 16,000 chronically affected animals. Animals with chronic disease or frequent recurrent low grade episodes require long term therapy with pain relieving drugs which are not without toxicity, causing damage to the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and liver. Approximately 10 percent of horses at The Horse Trust have laminitis, including ex-police horse Snodgrass.

British Young Riders Dressage
   . Next generation takes centre stage A packed programme of events is planned for young dressage riders in the North West.  British Dressage is expanding the activities available as part of the British Young Riders Dressage Scheme known as BYRDS. Monthly clinics, rider squad test practices, camps and dressage to music workshops are all taking place throughout the year. British Dressage North West Regional Development Officer Elaine Gray said: “We are going to make 2010 the best ever year for young dressage riders. There is something to stretch and challenge all riders, and I am sure they will enjoy it. “We have also joined with Jane Walker of Active Rider camps to create a fun and educational packed programme for the BYRDS camps.’ Riders aged eight to 25 can take part in BYRDS. Information On Worming
Information on worming Due to the growing problem of drug-resistant worms, people are advised to take a more informed and strategic approach when worming their horse.  Small redworms (cyathostomins) are the most important parasite affecting horses. But overuse of worming drugs has led to the development of drug-resistant small red worms. Researchers have found evidence of small redworm resistance to each of the three drug types, and the first incidence of multi-drug resistance was recently discovered in Brazil1.  If a horse is infected with multi-drug resistant redworms, it may suffer the effects of a severe small redworm infection, which can include weight loss, colic, diarrhoea and death.
